county schools are operating oh one hour day, queen anne's county operating on a 90 minute delay with no morning pre-k. a high speed chase bringing our nation's capitol to a standstill. now police are trying to figure out what motivated a dental hygienist from connecticut. derek valcourt caught up with people caught up in the chaos. first here is susan mcginnis. >> investigators wearing hazmat suits searched the stamford, connecticut home of the woman police say triggered a democrat make car chase. >> police were there to go through that and try to find out what would they learn from her computer, notes or anything else. something that could give them a window as to a motive. >> cbs news has learned the driver was 34-year-old miriam

kerry. police shot and killed her outside the u.s. capitol thursday afternoon. the incident started at the white house where officials say kerry struck a barricade with her black inifiniti sedan. she then sped down pennsylvania avenue towards the capitol. that's where police officers thought they had her boxed in but kerry backed up and tried to speed off again. police opened fire, killing the woman. officers found a young girl inside the car. >> the child is approximately a year old and is in good condition and in protective custody. >> police are still here on capitol hill collecting evidence and investigating what happened. part of that is determining why police choose to use deadly force to stop the suspect. >> the united states secret service and capitol police officers acted heroically in trying to stop in this suspect from entering security perimeters. >> both the white house and u.s. capitol were put on lock down during the incident. >> in washington, susan

mcginnis, wjz eyewitness news. >> one secret service officer and a capitol police officer are injured because of the incident. both are said to be in good condition and are expected to fully recover. here is derek valcourt who talked with witnesses caught up in the panic yesterday, including so maryland lawmakers. >> certainly some tense and scary moments not just for folks inside the capitol but also for the tourist, visitors and people who live near by. >> the altercation may have been caught on camera. many in capitol hill couldn't see it, they could only hear it. >> a large bang. >> i said was that a car? it was like six shots, pop, pop, pop. >> some raced out of their homes after hearing the shots to see what was going on. >> we were surprised it was so close. >> david was a block away from where the incident ended. police ordered him and others back into their homes. >> a few seconds later i saw a

police officer kind of hugging a small child taking that child away from the scene. >> the incident put the entire capitol complex into lock down mode effecting everyone inside, including members of maryland's congressional delegation. >> you lock the doors, turn the lights off. >> dutch ruppersberger heard the warning >> i join the majority leader in expressing our gratitude to the capitol police. >> [applause] >> maryland congressman danny hoyer led a standing ovation, crediting capitol police. >> we knew we were safe. it's not good for the country to have an event like this. we felt safe. >> that lock down at the capitol complex lasted about an hour. then many in congress got back to work arguing about the government shut down. >> stay with wjz for complete coverage of the capitol hill

shooting. for updates on the investigation and more images from the scene go to cbsbaltimore.com. the man who accidentally ran over his grandson at the 4th of july parade in annapolis will not face charges in the incident. 7-year-old kyle aldridge died after being ran off. he fell off the trailer and fell underneath it. police say there's no way he could have known what was happening behind him. this morning the cause of a three alarm fire at a shopping center in cecil county is still under investigation. two firefighters are hurt after battling blames at the northeast plaza shopping center in the town of northeast. it took two and a half hours to get the fire under control. it caused $10 million in damage. an accused multimillionaire drug lord is now behind bars and a black market drug ring is said to be shut down. illegal drugs, including heroin and cocaine and guns were all available on the online marketplace known as the silk road. the fbi said it shut

down the website on wednesday and that 29-year-old ross ulbricht is the man behind the marketplace. >> silk road was set up to be completely anonymous. >> ulbricht is also charged here in maryland with ordering the torture and murder of a witness. he faces life in prison. with the end of the summer comes flu season. the first case has now been reported here in maryland. wjz and mike schuh are live outside the state office building complex. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. last year the flu reach ed ed epidemic proportions here in maryland. this year it's starting two weeks earlier. >> the first case of the year is now reported in maryland, a child living in the suburbs who was briefly hospitalized. it's the same strain of flu that killed jalen in 2009. >> i would never have imaged

that something as simple as the flu would have taken my son away from me. >> the flu reaches epidemic levels here in maryland with 5,600 confirmed cases and more than 3,000 patients hospitalized. >> last year was just out of control, the amounts of people we saw with the flu. we weren't even screening for the flu, we just knew they had it and treated them. >> dr. franco said he opens it keeps people out of the er this year with the warm weather. >> with the weather change and hopefully getting the vaccine right this year hopefully we'll be able to by pass that. >> by local counties are offering free flu shot clinics. people are taking advantage. >> people are getting sick and actually dying from it. it's very important that you take care of yourself so that you don't spread it to others too. >> a vaccine that could prevent tragedy. >> reporter: the flu is expected to peak in january and february. i'm mike schuh reporting live from the state health head quarters.

we're at 57 now in far western maryland. temperatures in the 60 degree range already. we are within 10 degrees of our normal high. calm winds around most of the area. drier conditions in place until now. the humidity levels are going up. a warm front is lifting into the region. that's keeping the warm air over the mid atlantic. cold front moving in our general direction. this warm front is the reason we have so much instability around, we have a chance for a shower in the afternoon. this front is going to interact with what will be the remanence of karen. this is going to pick it up, bring it in and out quickly monday into tuesday. we will get the rain from tropical storm karen, not the destructive problems. this is what is moving into the region. the warm front is responsible for the shower potential today. it will be more humid today. the front

maybe a scatter thunderstorm in the afternoon. a look at your first warning weather forecast coming up. what awaits you on the way to work or school, here is sharon at wjz traffic control. >> we can show you a live look at our one and only problem area. that is 95 in the northbound direction at the exit ramp from white marsh boulevard to 95 northbound. we have an accident. you can see plenty of flashing lights. at this point we're told that only the right shoulder is blocked. it doesn't seem to be causing any major delays at this point. if you're headed out on the beltway no major delays there either. 55 and 54 are your averages on the top and west sides. no problems on 95 either as far as speeds go in the southbound direction between white marsh and the tunnel. there's a look at the topside of the beltway. now wjz has the stories people are talking about this morning. here's don. >> thank you. we have two eastern shore school delays to pass along. kent county schools are

operating one hour late today and queen anne's county schools are operating 90 minutes late with no morning pre-k. it's due to fog east of the bay bridge. things have calmed down in washington dc after a connecticut woman leads police and secret service officers on a chase down pennsylvania avenue. here is danielle nottingham. >> right now it seems like a puzzle. a woman with a young child taking police on a high speed chase bringing capitol hill to a standstill. officials are trying to piece together what happened. >> gunshots echoed across capitol hill as police tried to stop the driver of a car that struck a barricade outside the white house. furloughed government employee mark craddick watched it all. >> i heard the national string of what sounded like fire crackers going on. >> the chase started more than a mile away. a black inifiniti

coupe hit a barricade near the white house. the car was driven by miriam kerry of stamford, kt connecticut. the car pedestrian off towards the capitol, weaving in and out of traffic accident. >> police almost had kerry cornered across sidewalk barricades near the capitol building but she backed up into a squad car and sped away. that's when the shots rang out. >> the entire capital complex was shut down. the chase ended when the car ran a curve. kerry who was shot multiple times later died. a young child was also found in the car. >> the child is approximately a year old and is in good condition and in protective custody. >> police are now searching through kerry's connecticut home. investigators don't know why she ran into the barricades.

with no partisan strings attached. >> republicans want a budget bill that delays or defunds the affordable care act. >> we should sit down and have a discussion. because there is an insistence on no negotiations, no talking, my way or the highway we are here. >> but today we could see both parties agree on something. the house is expected to vote on a proposal that would give back pay to furloughed federal workers when the shut down ends. the u.s. treasury department is calling on congress to strike a deal on raising the debt ceiling. we could plunge down worst than the great depressionif not. >> for some it's a matter of life and death that are struggling. the national institutes of health in bethesda cannot begin new clinical trials because of it. jessica kartalija is here to talk to a little girl who is counting on

one of those to survive. >> 8-year-old mattie major doesn't look sick at all. this week her leukemia came back. her mother, robin major, has reason to. the clinical trial mattie needs cannot be approved by the fda because they have been shut down with the rest of the federal government. >> i'm completely blown away of how callus and carelessly they've used us to push their own agenda. >> robin said her cancer is curable in 90% of the cases. her daughter is in that 10% category. six months ago she went through a clinical trial that worked. because of her relapse she's scheduled to have it again. now it's in the air. >> for mat it shalls ttie this is truly life or death. this isn't a game. this isn't pushing one ideal over another. this is my

baby's life. >> the people hoping to join clinical trials here at nih are now being turned away because three-quarters of all employees are being furloughed. those already enrolled in clinical trials will get care. >> they should take a cue from my child and act like her. she's eight but showing maturity way beyonld any yond any of them. >> love. >> about 200 new patient s are admitted for these trials every week. of 200, 30 are children and often 10 of them have cancer. jessica kartalija, wjz eyewitness news. >> three-quarters of employees, nearly 15,000 people are currently on furlough. in baltimore county police are trying to piece together what happened to a man found dead at robert e. lee park. the

good morning. it is another mild start to the day. we are looking at temperatures in the range from about 57 in oakland to about 67 down towards dc. 66 at pax river, 62 bwi, 61 bel air. everybody in that low to

mid 60 degree range. calm winds currently around. that's helping to contribute to the fog problem that we have out there right now. we've had more moisture and the dew points have been higher over the last day or so. so that's kind of sitting and cooling over night and creates the fog. right now what we have is a warm front lifting across the area. that means that we say in that warmer zone. here's the high pressure. it's a clock wise flow around that high that's bringing in that warm air from the south. we expect this front moving in across the country is going to interact with what will be the remanence of tropical storm karen. karen is still a tropical storm. it's going to be moving our direction sunday into monday. that means that with all this warm air in place it's all going to start to interact with the front. this front is really kind of the key. the front is going to lift karen in and kind of zoom it on by. we're not going to get the destruction that comes along with a tropical storm, but we'll get the rain.

the audience knows your story. you know, you're an artist true and through, whether before the incident or now. that's what you do. do you have to be born with that skill, with an eye for color? i'm looking at the guitar. there must be 100 different shades of brown in there. do you have to be born with this? >> well, i think that maybe if you say being born with it is having that want to do something you love even after a life-changing disability, i think maybe if i didn't have that strive to be an artist i wouldn't have continued. since i loved painting so much it was something that i had to keep doing in my life, even if i had to do it in a new way. >> i mean, we just took a tight

it over shadows your incredible work? >> does it over shadow my work? well, i want people to appreciate my art work for the art work itself. it's okay with me if people get that added, you know, sense of awe when they realize how the art work was created. it's a difficult technique. it's a labor of love so i continue to do it. >> are there any -- we only have about 30 or 40 seconds left which is unfortunate, i could talk to you forever. do you do special jaw exercises to keep your strength up? no, seriously. >> no. i do think i'm probably going to need very strong glasses in the next five to ten years just from painting at such a close proximity.
